This trilingual (Polish/English/French) book will contain high quality reproductions of 118 prints ( 18 in col.) from the graphics collection of the Wanda Stachiewicz Polish Library in Montréal. These prints are representative examples of the work of forty graphic artists active in Poland between the years 1918-1939, in a variety of media, with woodcuts predominating. This collection is of a particular interest because this period can be considered as the golden age of Polish graphic art and much of this art was destroyed during the Second World War. The book will also include short-biographies of the artists whose work is represented, a general article about graphic art in Poland in the inter-war period and a brief history of the Institute and its Library since their founding in 1943. The
preparation of the book was supervised by the Editing Committtee chaired
by Prof. Hanna M. Pappius, vice-president ot the Polish Institute of Arts
and Sciences in Canada and director of the Polish Library. Its editor in-chief
is Prof. Paweł Wyczyński, well known writer specializing in textology.
The prints were initially catalogued and the biographical notes were drafted
by Agata Pietrzak, custodian of Special Collections of the National Library
in Warsaw. Krzysztof Krużel , the Head of the Graphics Section of the Library
of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków contributed the
background article. English and French texts have been prepared by
Prof. Paul Wyczyński.
The
Polish Ministry of Culture and the Society Wspólnota Polska of Warsaw both
contributed significant financial support.
The book can be ordered at a special, pre-publication price of $ 35 + $ 5 postage until May 15th, 1999. After publication, expected in June 1999, regular price will be $ 50 + postage. Please send a cheque payable to: The
